Abstract

Presents over sixty abstracts summarising the 1999 Employment Research Unit annual conference held at the University of Cardiff. Explores the multiple impacts of globalization on work and employment in contemporary organizations. Covers the human resource management implications of organizational responses to globalization. THE new President of the Library Association, a handsome portrait of whom appears in the December Library Association Record, brings to the office the influences of a career of fine public service. We, in common with every journal that speaks to and for librarians, assure him of loyalty and congratulate ourselves on this addition to the roll of distinguished men who have served librarianship. The Record is wise in reminding us that we are more than a librarians' association and the regular election of men of affairs as presidents is a policy that used to be followed and should now be continued. The policy need not exclude in normal circumstances an alternate librarian president.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe a methodology for predicting the effects of glaze ice geometry on airfoil aerodynamic coefficients by using neural network (NN) prediction. Effects of icing on angle of attack stall are also discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The typical glaze ice geometry covers ice horn leading‐edge radius, ice height, and ice horn position on airfoil surface. By using artificial NN technique, several NNs are developed to study the correlations between ice geometry parameters and airfoil aerodynamic coefficients. Effects of ice geometry on airfoil hinge moment coefficient are also obtained to predict the angle of attack stall.

Findings

NN prediction is feasible and effective to study the effects of ice geometry on airfoil performance. The ice horn location and height, which have a more evident and serious effect on airfoil performance than ice horn leading‐edge radius, are inversely proportional to the maximum lift coefficient. Ice accretions on the after‐location of the upper surface of the airfoil leading edges have the most critical effects on the airfoil performance degradation. The catastrophe of hinge moment and unstable hinge moment coefficient can be used to predict the stall effectively.

Practical implications

Since the simulation results of NNs are shown to have high coherence with the tunnel test data, it can be further used to predict coefficients at non‐experimental conditions.

Originality/value

The simulation method by using NNs here can lay the foundation of the further research about the airfoil performance in different ice cloud conditions through predicting the relations between the ice cloud conditions and ice geometry.

Abstract

Over the years we have reported prosecutions where the defence has alleged, and with circumstantial support that the presence of a harmful foreign body in food was deliberate through the action of a single disgruntled employee or where the labour relations climate generally has been bad. It makes no difference to the manufacturer's responsibility—the offence is an absolute one—but occasionally courts have allowed it in mitigation. Sometimes, it has been the nature of the extraneous material, e.g. fragments of glass or metal, the like of which did not exist in the factory premises or plant. This may be taken as a symptom of the vandalism of the age, but more recently, two incidents have drawn attention to its dangers and provided a glimpse of the criminal mind which can inflict such injury on employers, and expose innocent consumers, of all ages, to possible harm.

Outlines the main features of each industry and the environment in which it is operating. Provides examples, insights and quotes from Chief Executive Officers, managers and employees on their organization’s recipe for success. Mentions the effect technology has had in some industries. Talks about skilled and semi‐skilled workers, worker empowerment and the formation of teams. Addresses also the issue of change and the training that is required to deal with it in different industry sectors. Discusses remuneration packages and incentives offered to motivate employees. Notes the importance of customers in the face of increased competition. Extracts from each industry sector the various human resource practices that companies employ to manage their employees effectively ‐ revealing that there is a wide diversity in approach and what is right for one industry sector would not work in another. Offers some advice for managers, but, overall, fails to summarize what constitutes effective means of managing human behaviour.
